How to Extend a Student Visa for Canada

Canada is a popular destination for students looking to study abroad. According to the Canadian Immigration Office, more than 130,000 international students study in Canada each year. If you are already studying in Canada and decide you wish to extend your stay, you will need to apply for an extension to your student visa before your current visa expires. The application process is relatively simple, but you will need to show proof that you will be enrolled in a Canadian college or university during the period of your student visa extension.

Instructions

  1. Check the expiration date on your student visa for Canada. You need to apply for an extension for your student visa before this expiration date. The Canadian Immigration Office recommends that you start the process for extending your student visa 30 days before your current visa expires.
  2. Ensure your passport is still valid for the length of time you are requesting the student visa extension. You cannot extend your student visa if your passport will expire during that period. If your passport will be expiring soon, visit your local consulate or embassy to renew your passport.
  3. Gather the required documentation you will need to extend your student visa. You are required to submit a copy of your university admission letter showing you will be enrolled in a Canadian university during the length of your visa extension period. In addition, you will need a copy of your passport and current student visa. You will also need to provide proof that you can support yourself in Canada by sending a copy of your bank statements or financial aid documents.
  4. Visit the website of the Canadian Immigration Office and download the Application to Change Conditions or Extend Your Stay in Canada. (A link to the form is provided below under Resources.)
  5. Fill out the form with the required information. Check “Box A” at the top of the form–this indicates that you are applying for an extension of your current student visa. You will also need to enter your name, birth date, citizenship, passport number and expiration date, marital status and your address in Canada. If you have any family members staying with you in Canada, enter their information in the appropriate boxes. Check the “I agree” box at the end and sign and date the form.
  6. Print two copies of the form and keep one for your records.
  7. Pay the processing fee of $125 Canadian dollars (as of 2009). Pay online with a Visa, MasterCard or American Express by visiting the Canadian Immigration website and clicking “Pay my application fees” on its homepage. The website will guide you through the process. After you have submitted payment, the website will display a receipt. Print this receipt and include it with your application.
  8. Put all the required documents in a 9-inch by 12-inch envelope. Include the completed application form, all supporting documents gathered in Step 3 and the payment receipt obtained in Step 7. Address the envelope to:

    Pay the proper postage and mail the envelope at your local post office.

How to Obtain a German Study Visa

Instructions

  1. Enroll in a German university. You can do this by either enrolling independently or through a foreign exchange program at your existing university. You may also use an education agent for this. Have your certificate of admission or confirmation of your application to the German school.
  2. Contact the German consulate in your area. The German Missions website has a list of consulates across the country at Germany.info. Obtain the application and declaration form for a study visa directly from a consulate or download the forms from the website.
  3. Complete the two copies of the application and declaration.
  4. Turn in the applications and declarations along with two passport photos, your letter of acceptance to the German school and proof of funds to support yourself while in Germany. In most cases the application must be submitted at a consulate in person with a valid passport as proof of identity.

A visa is a permit issued by the foreign affairs or state department of a country. It allows you to enter the country. Visas are usually stickers placed inside your passport. In most cases, you must apply for it in your own country before you travel. Because of an agreement between many developed countries, some citizens do not require visas when they go to each other’s countries for short stays of less than three months, for business purposes, or as tourists. However, the purpose for which you enter a country must agree with the visa you receive. You cannot apply for most types of visas, or change visa types, once you are in the country. To enter as a student for a stay of longer than 90 days, you must apply for a visa before you travel. In other words, you cannot enter the country as a tourist and then register as a student. Similarly, you cannot get a short-term work visa and then enroll as a student.

In some countries, student visas might be valid only for a short period of time, perhaps for a period of three months. This gives you enough time to enter the country during the period before the academic year usually begins. Upon arriving, you are expected to register at a university and obtain a residency card confirming where you will live while you are a student there. After you obtain the card, it becomes the proof of your right to remain in the country. If you go to a country as an intern for the summer and then begin a study program in the fall, you will probably require another visa and might have to return home between the two experiences.

When to Apply

It might take as long as four months to obtain a visa for certain countries. Therefore, you should apply for the visa as soon as you receive the necessary documents confirming admission to the host university overseas.
If your program is under the sponsorship of an American university or organization, it should provide you with instructions about this procedure, help you get the admission document, and arrange for your visa. Documents You Usually Need

Australia requires a certificate of eligibility from the host university and a health report prepared by a physician on the official Australian government form. Procedures are being simplified for American students.

 

Canada

Students going to Quebec must obtain a visa from the provincial government in addition to documents from the Canadian embassy and present them with their passport at the border, together with financial certification and a letter of admission from the host university. It might take one to two months to obtain the documents from Quebec. There are required to enter Canada if you plan to study in Quebec. For other provinces, apply for the visa to enter Canada at the border.

Some insurance companies write letters in legal terms that are difficult for a nonnative speaker of English to read and understand. Required Immunizations or Medical Examinations

Other countries (including Australia) might require you to submit the results of a medical examination administered in accordance with their instructions (examples follow). Preparing and Submitting Your Visa Application
